Introducing Plavoro

Effortless Recipe Management

I’ve been a bit of a recipe junkie for as long as I can remember. My mom used to cut recipes out of magazines and post them on the refrigerator at home. When we needed to shop for groceries she’d carry the recipes with her in her purse and try to cobble together the ingredients at the store. I always found this to be a highly inefficient process, and have been working for over a decade on a way to make it better.

The first iteration, Recipe Cart, in 2010 fell short because recipe entry was hard. Individual ingredients are referenced by different recipes in different ways including brand names, modifiers (sliced, chopped, diced) or slightly different names. When one of the goals is to maximize shopping trips and group recipes by similar ingredients it’s very important that the ingredients are consistent across recipes. Recipe Cart put that onus on the user to be sure they entered ingredients consistently. Entering a recipe was a 10 to 15 minute task, and who has that kind of time?

In 2019, the idea hit me to provide the recipe-entry as a service to content creators. I could internally create very consistent digital versions of recipes, and then we would simply sell these digital versions to consumers. Because I was heavily into the Cocktail resurgence at the time, I focused on that niche and this website was born. The problem there was a disconnect between the creators and the people who owned the recipes (the publishers). Turns out, the publishers want to sell their books and would prefer people not have digital copies of their recipes. Fair enough.

As we rounded out 2023, I realized that a shift in technology was happening and that I could put the digitization of recipes back into the hands of consumers. I built a quick version for myself to prove that it was possible and was blown away by the results. For the first time, an app can exist that can import a recipe from any source, automatically reconcile the ingredients to a master list, categorize and tag within a few minutes. It is my belief that this technology can change the way people cook, and especially shop, for their home cooking and mixology. Plavoro is the product of a decade of thought and energy put into solving this problem, and I am sure it will continue to evolve in the coming months and years. I can’t wait for you to try it!
